Who Killed Kenny a Good Tonic for Mackney 18th February 2016 by Julie Maughan

The win of Who Killed Kenny relieved the pain just marginally for trainer Danny Mackney in taking out the Global Bloodstock Pace (1980m) at Tamworth.

Mackney normally handles the reins behind the Kenneth J-Fakin Romar gelding but engaged Lola Weidemann on this occasion due to being on the sick list himself.

“I’m over the moon. Very emotional win” said Mackney “I got out of hospital especially to watch him (Who Killed Kenny) race as I thought he was a good thing today”

“He had the best draw in the race and the best driver in Australia so you can’t go wrong” added Mackney.

Weidemann sent Who Killed Kenny straight to the lead from the pole with Bobbie McArdle (Tom Ison) racing out in the breeze but up the back straight on the final occasion Who Killed Kenny had to hold off  Chantry from the Michael Formosa stables who looked a strong contender.

“I thought he had me” said Weidemann of Chantry but Who Killed Kenny fought on for an eventual 1.5 metre win over Chantry and McArdles Star (Chris Shepherdson) 9.2 metres away third.

“He (Who Killed Kenny) was able to hold the lead– he was really relaxed and raced well” added Weidemann.

For Mackney the second career win of Who Killed Kenny “was just what the Doctor ordered”

“At his last start here at Tamworth he got held up. We were in behind the leader and it really dropped back in his face, then we went to Newcastle” said Mackney.

Who Killed Kenny is raced by the March family but Mackney has had the five year old gelding from the outset.

“I have had him from the get go” said Mackney “He has been a lovely little horse for us”

“He’s done it tough but he needed the run” added Mackney who will be on the sidelines for at least six weeks relying on his wife Kellie to be “in control” while he recuperates but was happy to receive the trophy presented from Global Bloodstock for the win.

“The last trophy I won was the North West Junior Drivers Trophy back in 2003/2004 season” joked Mackney.
