Vale Barry Schipp – North West Harness Racing Identity
The morning of Thursday 18th August 2022 saw North West Harness Racing identity Barry John Schipp lose his relatively short battle with stomach cancer at the age of 74 years.
Barry, a Life Member was heavily involved with the Tamworth Harness Racing Club as a committee member for over 25 years, during which time he used his accounting background to steer the Club as Treasurer and in his later years of involvement as Deputy Chairman.
From his home at Hallsville, a short distance north of Tamworth, Barry engaged in his passion as a Standardbred breeder, owner and trainer, still holding his A-Grade Trainers Licence at the time of his passing.
PAY ME SMART NZ his latest pacer, raced at the Golden Guitar Paceway on Thursday 11th August which Barry witnessed from his hospital bed. Unfortunately he didn’t see it race again in The Barry Schipp Appreciation Pace on the day of his death. Barry is fondly remembered by both his regular drivers Ian (Spud) Verning and Michael Grima who were amongst those gathered at the paceway on the day of his passing to honour his memory.
Barry is survived by wife Beverley and daughters Raelene and Kylie and their families.
