Cameron Davies liked the results from the Tamworth HRC meeting last Thursday – especially after he trained a double and drove a winner himself.
“I feel very good to be able to have a training double here today” simpered Davies. “It sort of makes up after last week”
Davies was confident about the win of Magic Maddie who was a late scratching at Tamworth the week prior due to a race incident that saw five horses scratched from the race.
“I was quietly confident” said Davies “She has been going pretty good – and trialled good last week at Maitland”
Magic Maddie had her last win back in April - which was on the Tamworth Paceway - where the Courage Under Fire-Dolly Soks mare won the Changeover Droughtbreaker Mile Heat 1 over 1609 metres but had no luck in the final.
“She won a heat of the Droughtbreaker but no luck in the final – she drew wide and we had to go back” added Davies.
Magic Maddie drew the seven last Thursday and raced in on the leader back with Our Planet Princess (Dan Morgan) heading the field and race favourite Iownaturbo (Michael Grima) racing out in the breeze.
Iownaturbo kicked clear in the back straight on the final occasion and Davies took the trail through to race home down the straight for a 15 metre win over Iownaturbo and Our Planet Princess 7.5 metres away third.
“That is her go” added Davies after the win “have cover and then have a dash at them but we had a bit of luck when the favourite got parked”
(Magic Maddie then started at Newcastle on Monday and had no luck to finish third to Second Major)
Davies then engaged Laura Spencer to take the reins behind Playboysholiday in the PeterMac Photography Pace which resulted in a win.
“He went good and he has been racing well” said Spencer with Playboysholiday making it back to back wins at Tamworth “He won last start and Cameron drove him then”
“I have driven him (Playboysholiday) a few times and have just been unlucky but he has got some good gate speed”
Spencer utilised the speed out of the four barrier to have an all the way win with the Blissfull Hall-Bunnyon Holiday gelding.
The win was also a first in the winner’s circle for Laura Spencer on the Tamworth Paceway with the pre-school teacher utilising the school holidays.
“I have only driven about half a dozen horses here as I don’t come up very often” added Spencer
“I was lucky I got the day off work and could come up and drive the horse – Cameron is good to drive for”.
“I got him (Playboysholiday) to relax early in the race – he is the sort of horse you have to drive him like a little baby and he will go good”
Playboysholiday had a 2.8 metre win over Leighmont (Brad Elder) and Dontbefoolish (Lola Weidemann) 2.4 metres away third.
Laura Spencer could have had an even bigger day at Tamworth if her own pacer Son Of A Star had won but had to settle for second to Dehillman – beaten a head.
