Julie Maughan's Raceday Report Sunday 2nd October 2016 - Weidemanns return in form

 

WEIDEMANNS BACK IN FORM AT TAMWORTH

Clifton based sisters Julie and Lola Weidemann kicked the new season off on the right hoof at Tamworth last Sunday October 2nd.

Julie as the trainer had three winners whilst sister Lola matched her in the driving stakes with three wins and niece Stacey raised the odds with a winning drive as well.

Lola opened her account with the win behind Irishtown Babe - who commenced from the two barrier in the opening event -THRC New Season Ladyship Pace – and was content for local pacer Kenfury Lass (Anthony Varga) to take the lead.

"There was too much speed on the inside and you just can’t keep pushing forever. I didn’t really want to be in the death but that’s how we ended up"

With a first quarter run in 28.2 sec Weidemann was still able to place the pressure on Kenfury Lass before thrusting up the speed in the back straight on the final occasion and racing away from the field.

Manilla pacer McQueen Regal (Courtney Sutherland) gave chase and powered down the home straight with Irishtown Babe holding on for 1.6 metre win over McQueen Regal and Kenfury Lass 3.4 metres away third.

"I probably went too soon but she was strong enough to get home" added Weidemann of the Cammibest USA-Our Reno Babe four year old mare.

"She has done a good job with that mile rate"

For the 1609 metres Irishtown Babe clocked 1.59.8 at her fifth career win from 43 race stars.

After the win Lola Weidemann was asked of her days racing engagements where she had six drives booked in on the eight event program

"I looked at the program and thought it was going to be a hard days racing –we are happy we have got a winner and if we don’t get anymore that’s all good"

Little did Weidemann know how the days racing would transpire for the stable.

Readily then showed true form in taking out the following event – the 2015/2016 Premiership Presentation Day Lordship Pace with Stacey Weidemann in the spider.

Weidemann showed a "well- timed" all the way win in the 1609 metre race with Readily having a winning margin of 20 metres over Tulhurst Dibiase (Scott Welsh) and Risky Buziness (Ricky Gordon) 2.7 metres away third.

Mile rate over the 1609m for the P B Bullville USA-When To Hold gelding was 1.58.4

"I thought if he could get to the front he would be a good show as he has been in pretty good form and he has been pretty consistent" said Stacey Weidemann "He did it pretty easy"

A "catch drive" behind the Jared Hetherington trained Sporty Belle was also an impressive winning drive for Lola Weidemann.

"I just got out in time and credit to the other horse [Sassy Shannon] it went pretty quick and I thought I could pick it up and I nearly didn’t"

Sporty Belle showed a tonne of speed after being tucked in behind race leader Sassy Shannon and gained a split on the final turn - displaying a good turn of foot to race down the home straight and claim a half head win over Sassy Shannon (Anthony Varga) and Sarah Sheffield (Tom Ison) 12 metres away third.

Major Deed – the 2015/2016 Peter McNamara Photography Horse of the Year at Tamworth – showed he will be a strong contender again this season in taking out the final event for the day.

The Art Major USA-C C Lobell gelding was having start 99 for his 18th career win in taking out the Prydes Easifeed Pace (1980m).

"Nice to be able to drive something like him - he is getting better and better" added Lola of Major Deed.

With French Lesson (Nathan Dawson) leading the field and The Brazen Jasper (Stacey Weidemann) racing out in the breeze Lola Weidemann made a bold race move.

Two laps from home - after racing four back in the outside running line - elected to race Major Deed up to be outside race leader – French Lesson.

Major Deed then came away for a 7.5 metre win over Mabrook (Roy Roots Jnr) and Artique (Nathan Carroll) a half neck away third.

"It is a really good start to the season for us – we have been counting down the days to come back to Tamworth – we can’t get runs with some of the horses up home and we class Tamworth as our local track - we would rather just race here" stated Lola Weidemann.
