IM WITH LEXY TAKES OUT STARMAKER by Julie Maughan
"She went good – she went super" was how Bathurst trainer Bernie Hewitt summed up the win of I’m With Lexy in the $15,000 Tamworth HRC Star Maker Final.
"I thought she was capable of winning it – she is starting to get to the top of her game" said Hewitt.
I’m With Lexy – a three year old Roll With Joe USA- Laughing Lexy filly – has now had 17 race starts for four wins and nine placings.
"She is continuing on like her older sister" added Hewitt with the older sister being Read About Lexy who had 22 starts for 11 wins and nine placings and over $150,000 in prizemoney.
Both pacers are owned by Lex Crosby who was trackside at Tamworth to witness the win in the feature race for three year olds.
Hewitt also handles the reins behind I’m With Lexy and has indicated that the filly will have her next race start at Menangle on Saturday night in the $14,000 Harness Breeders NSW Pink Diamond.
Bernie Hewitt was not surprised by the win of I’m With Lexy after finishing second to Rocknroll With Emma (Michael Formosa) in the first heat of the series.
"She has been racing in great company" added Hewitt "each run he is tightening up race wise"
Bernie Hewitt is no stranger to the Tamworth Paceway and won a Tamworth Cup "about ten years ago".
"I won the Cup up there and have had a couple of finalists over the years in the Golden Guitar Final but it is the first time I have won a Starmaker Final"
"It is quite a good undercard race for the Golden Guitar"
I’m With Lexy went straight to the lead in the Starmaker Final from the four barrier to lead the field up with the John McCarthy trained and driven Bettor Be Gold racing out in the breeze.
"John realised I wanted to hold the lead"
"Bettor Be Gold is a tough horse and it is hard to race outside another horse - but I knew my filly wouldn’t lay down"
I’m With Lexy covered the 1980 metres with the first quarter covered in 31.1 sec, second quarter 29.3 sec, third quarter 28.9 sec and final quarter in 30.2 with a wile rate of 1.59.4.
"She managed to have a little in reserve at the end"
Tamworth Starmaker Final one week – Menangle feature race the next week! How’s that for form.
